Learn to fully harness the power of Microsoft Excel(r) to perform scientific and engineering calculations. With this text as your guide, you can significantly. Excel for Scientists and Engineers: Numerical Methods. Author(s). E. Joseph Billo. First published:2 November Print ISBN |Online. Preface. Our aim in Physics for Engineers and Scientists, Third Edition, is to present a modern Physics f Introduction to Probability and Statistics for Engineers.

Many other "Excel books for Scientists" simply offer elementary methods on error detection, lists of items and simple math like rounding off, etc. This book is completely different. It starts of on doing matrices with Excel, then goes through Interpolation, differentiation, Integration, Simultaneos Equations, Partial Differential equations, then finishes off with both Linear as well as Non-Linear Regression techniques and Curve Fitting.

In and of itself, even if it didn't show methods to do these things with an Excel spreadsheet, the book would be well worth the read simply as a refresher course in these topics.

However, it does show lucid, well-thought out examples of implementing complex numerical methods with standard Excel spreadsheets.

The only thing that this book is lacking in, is a coverage of normal level usage of VBA. It does start off in the very first few chapters with a cursory coverage of VBA, but that is pretty much all that we hear of VBA throughout the rest of the book.

Numerical methods for scientists and engineers

However, this is not too much of a drawback, because there are many volumes of other books which cover VBA in wonderful detail. What would be a marriage made in Heaven would be this book with more step-by-step integration with VBA, showing advanced programming techniques in Excel with regards to the great coverage of numerical methods. This is a great collection of numerical recipies for finding roots, interpolation, calculus and differential equations, both ordinary and partial.

Both the algorithms and code are given and a CD is included if you don't like to type them in yourself. The methods are well-presented and all of the ones I've played with have worked great.

This is not a book to learn Excel VBA programming. It has a short intro to this but a newcomer to VBA could not learn it very easily from here, even if they have programmed before. This is a grad-level text.

You will have to be very competent at VBA to understand many of the code examples. I needed some hard-hitting algorithms that I could implement in VBA and this book is just what I was looking for. One person found this helpful.

Outdated newer versions of excel have been released. Great book! Highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to get a more technical approach to excel.

Into the working life and using more applied formulas and methods, some of the origin to the aplied formulas have been rusty. This book gives a very effective and concise refresher. Concise i. It will be a classic in its subject area I believe. So far, there are no major errors; as can be found on quite many other first edition technical books these days. The Partial Differential Equation chapter was very effectively written. The approach takes one from almost zero up to speed, in just a few pages.

Back to top. Compared to the direct methods that have been described, iterative methods are particularly efficient for the solution of sparse matrices. Sparse matrices are ones in which most of the elements are zero.

Physical systems in which the equations involve only a few of the variables are described by sparse matrices. The following sections describe two iterative methods: the Jacobi method and the Gauss-Seidel method. The Jacobi Method Implemented on a Worksheet In the Jacobi method, new values for all the n variables are calculated in each iteration cycle, and these values replace the previous values only when the iteration cycle is complete.

Improvement in one of the variables does not have an effect until the next cycle of iteration. For this reason it does not converge as rapidly as the Gauss-Seidel method, to be described in the following section.

The Jacobi method is shown implemented on a spreadsheet. Figure shows the table of coefficients and constants.

Data table for use with the Jacobi method. Row 9 contains suitable initial values. Moreover, practitioners in science and engineering will find that this guide saves hours of time by enabling them to perform most of their calculations with one familiar spreadsheet package. Reviews "I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone who finds themselves using Excel to do numerical computations beyond the basic spreadsheet operations.

The CD provides a wealth of custom functions that extend the usefulness of Excel plus virtually all of the spreadsheets, charts, and VBA code needed to perform the example problems given in the text.

This paperback edition and CD are a real bargain. Author Bios E.
