JMX technology enables Java applications to be managed without heavy investment: A JMX technology agent can run on most Java technology-enabled devices, thus Java applications can become manageable with little impact on their design.
A Java application simply needs to embed a managed object server and make some of its functionality available as one or several managed beans MBeans registered in the object server; that is all it takes to benefit from the management infrastructure. JMX technology provides a standard way to manage Java technology-based applications, systems, and networks.
JMX: Managing J2EE with Java Management Extensions
JMX technology provides a scalable, dynamic management architecture. Every JMX agent service is an independent module that can be plugged into the management agent, depending on the requirements.
This component-based approach means that JMX solutions can scale from small-footprint devices to large telecommunications switches and beyond. The JMX specification provides a set of core agent services. Additional services can be developed and dynamically loaded, unloaded, or updated in the management infrastructure.
JMX technology leverages existing standard Java technologies. JMX technology integrates easily with existing management solutions and emerging technologies.
Managed Beans are particularly used in the Java Management Extensions technology - but with Java EE 6 the specification provides for a more detailed meaning of a managed bean. Java EE 6 provides that a managed bean is a bean that is implemented by a Java class, which is called its bean class. A top-level Java class is a managed bean if it is defined to be a managed bean by any other Java EE technology specification for example, the JavaServer Faces technology specification , or if it meets all of the following conditions: It is not a non-static inner class.
It is a concrete class, or is annotated Decorator.
Java Management Extensions
No special declaration, such as an annotation, is required to define a managed bean. An MBean can notify the MBeanServer of its internal changes for the attributes by implementing the javax.
The application interested in the MBean's changes registers a listener javax. NotificationListener to the MBeanServer. Note that JMX does not guarantee that the listeners will receive all notifications.
Dynamic MBeans implement the javax.
DynamicMBean interface that provides a way to list the attributes and operations, and to get and set the attribute values. Open MBeans are dynamic MBeans that rely on the basic data types.You now have a standard means to manage your Java systems, networks and applications.
