The novel follows an intellectually-disabled, kind-hearted man who is witness to big events in American history. Eight years after Forrest Gump was published, its Oscar-winning film adaptation starring Tom Hanks turned it into a best-seller. And that's when Groom took a break from writing fiction. So I was thinking, after the commercial success of Forrest Gump, that I didn't really have any ideas that really grabbed me.

But there was one idea for a novel that stuck in Groom's head: He says a friend, Eddie Morgan a distant relative of the late J. Morgan , used to talk about his family's million-acre cattle ranch in northern Mexico, and how Pancho Villa attacked it in Groom says Villa had the ranch manager sabered to death and then kidnapped his children.

And he did: Groom's first work of fiction in almost 20 years is a sprawling, plus-page novel called El Paso.

It takes place during the Mexican Revolution and follows a railroad tycoon on a manhunt across the High Sierras to rescue his kidnapped grandchildren from Pancho Villa. The book's made-up characters interact with historical figures a lot like they did in Forrest Gump: Lt. Thank you for your feedback. Share your thoughts with other customers. I am probably one of the few that read the book prior to seeing the movie. I really liked the book as it was very satirical and light. When I saw the movie I liked it but it was much more heavy handed than the book. It was very different and as such I was actually disappointed with it. I understand that Hollywood had to make it more serious and create a story line.

It would be best to consider them separately as they cannot really be compared to each other.

They are that different in my opinion. Both wonderful in their own unique way. Like many, I saw the movie first and then read the book. While reading it, I found myself thinking that it was like a fanfiction to a movie I love. This story has all of the same characters, some of the same scenarios, and yet manages to be completely different from the movie.

This Forrest is not as naive and gullible as the movie Forrest. The situations in the book are more outlandish than the movie, but the characters themselves feel more believable.

Forrest makes mistakes with Jenny, he is not a blameless character riding her rollercoaster like in the movie.

The book and the movie are both great. Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. For the first time I can say a movie was better than the book it was based upon. The Gump character here is mean spirited and has none of the innocence that made the movie so successful. It just about spoiled the movie for me.

The basic elements are there: Forrest, Jenny, Bubba, Dan Vietnam and Forrest being an "idiot". But if you're looking to read the movie, forget it. This is a completely different plot, like a modern Baron of Munchaussen. I am still wondering why they decided and how they managed to make a fantastic movie from this so-so book. Sure, it has its moments. The last page is probably the best and probably only great moment literally speaking.

Ah, and the letter that Lt. Dan sends to Forrest in the middle part of the book, but that's all. I wonder what this book is trying to say. Maybe that life should be lived at its fullest no matter what, and in the ends what matters is how much fun and adventure you had.

My greatest disappointment was not finding any reference to the great music that is in the movie. One person found this helpful. After reading this one afternoon into evening, it was with the anticipation of a story that was more expansive than the movie. It was more. I am for the first time glad I watched the movie years ago or I would have been disappointed. The book has a richer dynamic that I cannot explain. Read it.

I have a new-found respect for movie screenwriters after reading this book. I give director Robert Zemeckis and screenwriter Eric Roth huge credit for taking this halfway decent book and turning it into a fantastic movie.

Groom's story is so full of far-out, unbelievable schlock that I have to believe it was written as a joke. I get it that the story is intended to be unbelievable and wacky, but still, the whole NASA astronaut section is just so over-the-top that it sounds like the fantasies of a ten-year old.

I think that if I had read the book before I saw the movie, 1 I wouldn't have finished it, and 2 I would not have seen the movie. It took real vision and art you know: Usually the movie cannot compare to the book. Forrest Gump the movie was done so well that it is one of my favorites.

While I enjoyed reading the book, it could not compare to the movie.

There are some scenes that are in the book that are not in the movie and vice versa. In the movie, everyone remembers the line "Run Forrest, run". Amazingly, the running across the country does not occur in the book. Bottom line:Forrest Gump the movie is excellent and a very entertaining film, it should not have beat Pulp Fiction for best picture but that's another story.
