Jan 15, Erin rated it really liked it Shelves: A really really really in-depth look at discourse analysis. The book includes numerous examples of discourse analysis. I read this book for a discourse analysis class where the professor would actually read entire pages out of the text.

The professor thought this was the best book ever on the subject. I would say that it is a bit too detailed and in-depth.

This book is wordy and difficult to follow without making any salient points. Far overpriced. It really wasn't worth a cent that I begrudgingly paid for it.

This is a great introduction to discourse analysis designed for upper level undergraduates but also useful for graduate students in other disciplines who just want to get the lay of the land. It has good discussion questions sprinkled throughout each chapter, making it a useful textbook, lots of suggestions for further reading, and a useful glossary.

Mark that. The examples written in this book are confusing and complex, but impressive.

There are millions of ways in which this book could have been written without being such a collection of perplexing, long-winded chunks of text. Feb 20, Tory S. Malden, MA: Blackwell, ISBN In this book, Johnstone proposes a comprehensive, eclectic approach to the analysis of discourse. She asserts that since no discourse theory provides definitive answers, her approach is a heuristic, exploratory tool that provides a means for answering some questions while raising others. The book consists of eight chapters.

The middle six chapters constitute the main body of the book. In each, J discusses a fundamental aspect that shapes and is shaped by discourse. J examines a variety of approaches and attempts to determine whether discourse rules are generative or statistical.
